King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia of Spain

The Spanish royal family’s response to anniversaries is quick, unique, and lacks signatures.

Received: 15 May 2026

This response came fast! Usually, I have to wait a month or two (I’ve even waited nearly a year!) for a response. But this response from Their Majesties King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia of Spain took barely three weeks.

I wrote to Their Majesties on the occasion of their wedding anniversary, and the reply is very much what I have come to expect from the Spanish court, specifically the office of Don Juan Carlos and Dona Sofia.

The response, like all responses from Spain, is written in Spanish and has been prepared by a secretary. But what makes responses from Juan Carlos and Sofia so peculiar is that it is never signed, neither with a typed name or hand drawn signature. This is highly unique and I have only ever seen this kind of response from their office. The office of His Majesty King Felipe VI usually has the typed name of the Secretary who prepared the letter.

Speaking of which, now is a good time to mention that King Juan Carlos is actually the *former* King of Spain. He abdicated several years ago in favor of his son, Felipe, who currently reigns as King of Spain.

The responses from Spain also include some of my favorite royal letterhead. The crest and font are so classy! What’s not to like!
